Advantages and Disadvantages of Typical Home Fish Tank Filters
Your tank filter depends on the tank you have, specifically the size, and the fish you plan to breed. But for those who just like keeping an aquarium at home, it’s best to choose from these types of fish tank filters: Undergravel, Canister and Power.
Undergravel filters are quite easy to set up and requires minimal parts replacement. The disadvantage is that gravel needs to be vacuumed regularly to make sure that water flow is smooth and uniform. This kind of filter can also be damaged by digging fish.
Canister fish tank filters are canisters filled with filter media. Water flow can be adjusted with this kind of filter, giving consideration to fish types that aren’t too comfortable with much water movement. It can be, however, hard to clean.
Power filters are the types that hang at the back of fish tanks. They are easy to use and provide a good supply of oxygen to the tank.
In choosing filters, keep in mind also the three kinds of filtering systems: mechanical for removing floating debris; biological for maintaining good bacteria; and chemical for taking out dissolved wastes.
