Welfare Program

The development of the Church Welfare Program is an interesting part of mormon history. The program had its beginnings in the 1930s and was fairly well developed during the Great Depression. The Welfare Program continues to run strongly today, on the eternal principle of hard work and self-reliance. While all people understand that individuals or families can fall on hard times, and that we should help those around us, the principle stands that we should not receive something for nothing; that is idleness. Mormon history shows the effectiveness of the Welfare Program to help people through hard times until they are self-sufficient again.
